The database contains:    25 families – 398 genus – 5,357 species – 1433 bibliographical references

Earthworms are clitellate annelids living mainly in soils, although some species inhabit freshwater environments. Earthworms perform a crucial role in the nutrient cycling, bioturbation of soil, and the decomposition of soil organic matter.

Drilobase is a database resulting from a collaborative work between worldwide members of the earthworm scientific community. Data are given per taxonomic unit. Please keep in mind that this project is a "work in progress" and will be updated over time.

Identification of earthworms is extremely complex and requires considerable specialized expertise. Some taxa require DNA sequencing. We do not provide such a service.
